Wallpaper Designs of Mirror Curves
نویسنده
چکیده
Mirror curves are constructed by bouncing a light ray through a space that contains mirrors off which the ball bounces. In a rectangular space, if the mirrors are placed symmetrically under one of the 2D symmetry groups (or “wallpaper groups”), then the resulting path has the same symmetry group. Inspired by certain sona designs of the Cokwe people of Africa, we search for single-component mirror curves that exhibit the 12 rectangular wallpaper symmetry groups, and search for families of such curves that remain single-component (mono-lineal) on arbitrarily large rectangles. We show such families exist on sets of n x m rectangles of positive density among the set of all n x m rectangles.

BRIDGES Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science Mirror curves are present in ethnical art, as Tamil threshold designs or Tchokwe sand drawings. Historically, they are to be found in the art of most peoples surrounding the Mediterranean, the Black and Caspian Seas, in the art of Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Persians, Turks, Arabs, Syrians, Hebrews and African tribes....
متن کاملMathematical Experiments with African Sona Designs
The sona designs of the Chokwe people of Angola/Congo are a particularly attractive form of “mirror curves,” which can be visualized as a curve drawn through a lattice of dots, bouncing off the edges of the lattice and off “mirrors” placed between some of those dots. Most such designs are drawn as a single, uninterrupted line, and most contain symmetries of some type. The mathematics of the des...
متن کاملAn Ultra-Low Power Variable Gain Current Mirror
A power efficient gain adjustment technique is described to realize programmable gain current mirror. The dissipation power changes over the wide gain range of structure are almost negligible. This property is in fact very interesting from power management perspective, especially in analog designs. The simple structure and constant frequency bandwidth are other ever-interesting merits of propos...
متن کاملCreating Symmetry : The Artful Mathematics of Wallpaper Patterns
This new book by Frank A. Farris, professor of mathematics at Santa Clara University, is a comprehensive introduction to the mathematics of symmetry. Symmetry has long provided a connection between mathematics and the visual arts. This book distinguishes itself from other treatments of the subject (e.g., [9], [5], and [1]) by its detailed descriptions of exactly how one creates new artistic des...
متن کاملInteractive wallpaper
The colour of the wallpaper in this project changes with the sound of the environment. The original colour of the wallpaper is blue, as the noise of the environment increases, the colour changes to warmer colour to the extent of red. With this effect, the wallpaper brings attention to the noise level of the room and encourages users to decrease the sound level of their conversations. The transf...
